For years, Jean-Michel Cazes, owner of the Château Lynch-Bages in Pauillac, has meandered through the roads of Languedoc. Attracted to the "patchwork quilt" of legendary terroirs which underpins the region, his gaze fell upon upon La Livinière, a village at the foot of the Montagne Noire, birthplace of the greatest vineyards in Minervois.
In 2002, Jean-Michel Cazes acquires two adjacent properties, creating an estate of 150 hectares, consisting of 50 hectares of vines and 25 hectares of olive trees. Together with his son Jean-Charles, they chose a name rich with meaning and history: L’Ostal Cazes, for, in old “Langue d’oc” (Occitan), “L’Ostal” referred to both the house and the family group living there as one idea.
With the acquisition of the Saint Joseph tile factory, a superb 19th century building, in 2003, the technical facilities for the property were brought under one roof.
